Hypermiling The Toyota Scion
The Toyota Hypermiling Scion made its first showing at the New York Auto Show in March of 2002. By January of 2003 there were only 105 California Toyota dealerships that that carried the Scion.Hypermiling is a driving strategy that is used to extend the distance of a gallon of gasoline. Although Toyota designs all their autos as lightweight as possible, and insure that people have the most sophisticated safety features available, there are also things that the drivers can do to save gasoline as well. Toyota offers tips to every driver to help save on fuel.
Hypermiling may even be used in any automobile, since many tips are related to the way people drive. The auto experts from the Toyota Company have tried and tested Hypermiling for many years, and know that what they tell people does work.
Toyota does their part for making their cars hypermile, by making them as lightweight as possible. On the new Scion has added a tire pressure monitoring system, which automatically alerts you if one of the tires starts losing air, usually due to a slow leak in the value stem.
Keeping the correct tire pressure helps save fuel dramatically, and prolongs the life of your tires, which is mostly caused by too much or too little tire pressure. Always inflate your tires to the recommended tire pressure that is stamped on each tire.
Toyota also suggests that you should not have extra weight in the car, as the extra weight takes more fuel to pull it. Autos with air conditioners should always keep the windows up at all times to increase the aerodynamic efficiency.
Toyota also recommends that people should not let their vehicles idle; idling uses fuel even when the vehicle isn’t going anywhere. Fast acceleration uses more fuel than anyone realizes, it is much better to move forward at a slower pace than speeding up the engine to get a jump on traffic. Practice slowing down your vehicle between stop lights as the harder the pressure you put on your brakes, the quicker sooner you will have to have a new brake job done and the tires will last for a much longer period of time.
When you are on a major highway or interstate, Toyota suggests that you slow the speed down considerably and not try to keep up with traffic, even if this means leaving home a little bit earlier to get to work. It has been scientifically proven that driving at 55 miles per hour does save a considerate amount of fuel and the results of a trip are only reduced by a few minutes. If your car has a cruise control, using it will also save fuel.
If you practice these tips every day you will begin to see a regular increase in the fuel consumption of your auto. It is easy to learn how to hypermile and the savings are fantastic during this time of such a high fuel crisis. Once you get used to it you will continue practicing it. Please keep these tips in mind and practice doing them constantly. After all the whole idea of hypermiling is to save you money.
