Hypermiling And Jeep
The Jeep Wrangler was first manufactured by AMC (American Motors Corporation) in 1987. Since 1988 Chrysler has been making this mini SUV which is also considered a convertible in its class. Maybe you’ve owned a Jeep or even ridden in one, often called an off-road vehicle, the Jeep Wrangler has become a common site among the cars that frequent the roads we all travel. Since people have been using the Jeep Wrangler as more than just a weekend SUV there have been some improvements done so that it can stay an every day car in the driveway. Jeep has given the Wrangler four doors and a wider wheel base. It also has navigation for the lost and (HSA) Hill Start Assist for those times when you are on an uneven plane.
Everybody wants good gas mileage from their car; the Jeep Wrangler has been a 4WD vehicle since 1987. In 2007 a 2WD option became available and a standard 6 cylinder engine became the staple. There has always been a choice between a manual and automatic transmission since 1987. In 2007 a 3.8 liter engine became the choice of those who wanted a Jeep Wrangler. Owning a manual transmission has shown to give the driver a little bit better gas mileage, it’s not a significant amount over owning an automatic but the 2008 Jeep Wrangler gets 18.5 MPG. This is based on city and highway driving.
In 1987 the Jeep Wrangler had the option of a 6 cylinder 4.2 liter engine with manual or automatic transmission, the MPG was 18. That same year a 4 cylinder 2.5 liter was offered, it got 19MPG. There wasn’t much difference since many people who owned a Jeep Wrangler were using it off road or hauling things with it. 1988 offered the same liter of engine choices, that year yielded 18MPG also. 1989 -1995 also showed to have similar gas mileage at 18MPG for the overall average.
Jeep did not manufacture any Wranglers for 1996 or 1997. The manufacturing year started back in 1998 and currently the present has shown Jeep to be consistent in gas mileage at around 18MPG’s. Although there have been options with an automatic and manual transmission and engine liter choices Jeep Wrangler has remained the same for miles per gallon.
The main problem for the low gas mileage is the tires that are fitted on the Jeep Wrangler. It uses up most of the gas just pulling those treads. If you put passenger tires on a jeep it would get better gas mileage but you wouldn’t be able to off road with it. Diesel might give it better gas mileage because of the low end torque but the Jeep Wrangler did not pass the EPA emissions test for diesel so it could not be manufactured in the USA. The weight of the Jeep Wrangle also attributes to the poor gas mileage, but you wouldn’t be able to lighten the frame any more than the 4,000 pounds it sets at right now. It’s also not aerodynamically made, the front fenders act as sails causing the gas mileage to stay low.
